I-RUN head!
cleaned up Jugs.......again...

I am still undecided on which gas tank...may use this skinny sporty tank now. I think it will show off all of the work on my heads better...

Here it is with the fat tank again:

Which would you use? I may ditch both of them and get something in between.
Also, I bought these heads off of ebay...used. They are from a 1971. My bike is a 1966. I've used the fitment excell file (found on this forum)to determine that they should work. They are similar, but not exactly the same. I am now to the point of bolting the heads on the jugs and assembling everything. Everything is ligned up (including the oil holes). However the bolts were a tiny bit off. I had to bore out the holes 1/32" larger to allow the bolts to fit. They now seem to bolt on fine. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge with fitting these newwer heads? Did you run into the same problem?
Thanks,
Calabeast

i like the look of the larger tanks, plus the peanut tanks are much higher i like to keep the weight down lower, much better handling with the lower center of gravity, these bikes are top heavy anyway, plus i just dont like to see all that space under the tank
I really like those heads. that looks great! I am looking forward to seeing how long that shine stays. If it works for you...I'd like to put the effort into mine. I live really, really really far away so none no-one would ever see the bikes together if I did....so perhaps you could share your secrets?
I like the little tanks too. I'm a chopper guy. However, with the beefy front tire it works on your bike.

Scott,
I would have no problem if you wanted to do the same to your heads. I've listed the steps below how I did it.
1. used paint thinner to strip off all of the old paint.
2. used my bench grinder with a wire brush attached and cleaned everything up.
3. sand blasted them.
4. Filed all of the problem areas. Some of the fins were very un-even. This step is what took most of my time.
5. Busted out the dremel and utilized almost every attachement in the kit to smooth out every nook and cranny I could get into.
6. sanded with 220, 600, 1000 and then 1500 grit paper.
7. used a metal polishing kit on my drill to polish the areas that were readily visible.
8. Cleansed the heads with paint thinner again.
9. sprayed them with air to make sure they were free of any debree.
10. washed with soapy water.
11. sprayed the heads with Eastwood's diamond clear extreme for bare metal. It is only good up to 600 degrees...so I am unsure as to how great it is going to hold up. My local ironhead guru said that he only uses 500 degree paint when he repaints heads and he thinks it will hold up for a while. We shall see..
12. Brushed a thicker coat of the same clear coat over the spayed clear to give hopefully give it extra protection.
It was time consuming, but I am pleased with how they turned out...lets just hope they stay that way.

Thank-you, give me something to do next winter instead of sitting in front of this computer.
...and thank-you for the comments. I have upgraded the regulator on mine from a mechanical to generator mounted creating additional space under my seat for the oil filter....getting rid of some unsightly hoses up front...further cleaning it up. Little things to keep me busy until the snow is all gone.

I think I've finally solved my tank dillema. I picked this up last friday. I am in the process of lowering the tunnel and putting the petcock on the other side, but I think it's a good fit. Fatter than the sporty and skinnier than the silver tank. Can anyone tell me what this tank is off of? I think maybe a 1970's Harley Sprint?
