Here are some pics of the 77/78 foofoo valve. First shows it installed but without the tube attached yet [not on my bike]; second shows the parts. The small part is the actual valve that fits inside the unit.
I installed one of these on my 1980 to get additional case venting. It was a tedious install as the '80 has a 1/8 NPT fitting down there and as you can see in the pic the foofoo is much larger than that - i started with a 1/8 NPT 45` fitting [to get around my forward controls] and worked from there.
I did notice that the engine sounded and felt like it was running much more freely, and acceleration seemed more quick, with the extra vent.
I have a 84 early with a gen. and mine is just vented to the air towards the back and towards the back sprocket and down towards the ground . Should I put a breather on it or just leave it alone. thanks

Stock it has the foofoo valve inside the gearcase cover, and was vented into the air cleaner. The suction from the air cleaner would increase the efficiency of the venting process, i assume but i do not know if this is significant.
You should not put a breather on that line as it has the one internally. You might consider running the hose into the air cleaner - wait for other opinions on this tho.
