The Crane Hi-4, for example, will work without a VOES. Same i believe for most other brands. They may have a VOES/NoVOES setting. Just a Matter of checking the description of various ones. But, as said, the bike will always run better with a VOES.

Installing and hooking up a VOES is not difficult. I did it on my 1980, which did not originally have one. It can attach to any bolt near the carb - the usual place is the top carb mounting bolt. Then the switch sits up there between the rocker covers.

Then there is the vacuum line - a short length of 1/8" ID black rubber hose. This runs from the VOES to a nipple on the carb. If the carb does not have one you can drill a hole in the manifold and install one [i think i described this earlier in this thread].

Two electrical lines: a ground which again can connect to any convenient bolt [i use a rocker cover bolt], and finally the line from the electronic ignition.

That VOES switch came if I remember correctly -86, in fact (from wiki) All Harley Davidson motorcycle carbureted models since the 1984 model year have used the VOES to improve throttle response, increase MPG, and meet EPA requirements for emissions.
It's quite small but handy, you can (almost) put it anywhere just connect hose to your manifold and that wire with red insulator to ignition module, thats it.

If you want better hints look about VOES
electrical an mechanical look that schema and you see what I mean.

Ok, time for a Sportster dependability story, My new 1970 XLCH had about 200 miles on it when I was siting at a stop light and one cylinder quit. I was about 2 miles from the H-D shop, It felt like it was hoping up and down all the way there, but never quit. It had a tight exhaust valve on the front cylinder. they said that was a common problem on a new motor, never happened again. It did make me learn how to adjust the valve after that.

Default Reliable Sportster.

Get the Factory Service and Parts manual. Study them and get your hands dirty.
Check everythng with a fine toothed comb. Then there won't be any surprises.
And stick with genuine HD parts when possible.
Aftermarket parts used to be quality parts made right here in the US.
Now many are made as cheaply as possible in CHINA.
Don't try and put a bunch of racing go fast crap on your bike. There's no reason to be in a hurry.

I have a '68 XLH, and I am going to get a Mallory electronic distributor. I hear they are the way to go if you have a distributor. I have a kick and electric, my father added the kick in '73 thank goodness. My battery died trying to start it and sometimes you ended up kickin' it, there were times I had a trail on the cement about 20 feet from the kickstand trying to kick it over.

I just read the latest posts here and have two comments...Sportsters came with a VOES beginning in '83, and an Ironhead runs much better if you adjust the exhaust valves slightly more loose than the factory manual says. My 2 cents, anyway.
