I've decided to get a sportster!!! I just have a few questions about what to look for. I want a 2004-2006 for the rubber mounted engine. It's going to be a commuter 90% of the time and the occasional weekend ride or beach trip. I can find plenty in my area in my price range but mileage seems to be all over the place. 3K up to 15K miles. Less than $1000 difference between them. How many miles is too many for a $4000 sportster?
I just bought my first Sportster. It's a 2006 883c. Had 8509 miles. I love the bike. But watch for bike that have set idle too long. The one I bought has off idle problems..which is common. Guy I got it from had all the services done my Moco just didn't ride enough I guess. Just saying be careful.
My '08 had ~5000 miles on it when I got it this spring. Low miles, but not completely parked for 3 years. Broken in, but not broken.
Jay is right, super low miles can be a problem. On the other hand, there are those on the forum with 100,000 miles on a Sporty. These things are built to last. I would err on the side of more miles than looking for one with uncharacteristically low miles.
When I got my bike is was a year old and had 9600 on it and it's fine. If i were you i would step up to a 2007 and later to get the EFI over the carb-you will be much happier and for being a commuter bike the EFI will be alot better-shoter warm up times, starts every time first hit and better response. As long as you are under 10K miles to start I do not feel that's bad.
15k miles isn't too many! There are plenty of Sportsters running around with 40K plus on them. Find one you like! If it looks good, runs good, has good tires and falls within your budget you should be fine! I don't mind a carbed bike myself! They can be tuned to run well! If in doubt! Have a mechanic check it out for you!
If i have to do a major rebuild at 100k running Mobile 1 i probably wont buy another HD. Modern day lubrication is unbelievable. I'd expect my sporty insides to look brand new at 100k.... Just saying
