I pulled the top end off my '71 xl for a fresh bore and was wondering about rod play. there is no up and down movement that i can detect but what about side movement? the service guide has some real tight tolerances that arent even close to what i have. any advice??
Up and down: you are good there as there should be no "appreciable up and down play" according to the FM.
Side to side: check side shake at the rod tip at extreme upper end; 11/64 in or more for the front rod or 3/64 in or more in the rear rod means lower bearing should be refitted. This requires removing and disassembling the crankcase.
I am just quoting the manual here as my "newer" ironhead uses a different method to check the bearing. The pic for your year shows the crank turned so that the rod is down low, the man is holding a ruler on the case with one end against the rod, just under where the wrist pin was.
