Going to go to a 23 tooth sprocket on my 74 XLH.
What can I expect in regards to the chain? I know of the clearance issues but it is automatic that a longer chain will be required? My current chain is relatively new and would like to go with it if possible. Add a master link?
Thanks
John F
My 1980 takes a 106 link o-ring chain. Attached [blurry] pic shows where i ground the standoff; also at the top you can see where the chain ground the cover when it was too loose.
I am unsure how chains are measured. But i think the link length must be the same with the o-ring chain being wider, otherwise it would not fit the sprocket. So you would need the same length as what you now have. See what others may say also.
i had enough adjustment to make mine work, but if you had to i would not see why you could not add a link and a half, cant just add a master have to add a half link also
Unless you are running the chain adjusters all of the way in with the stock sprocket you will have plenty of adjustment for the stock chain length with the 23 tooth. It does help a lot at cuising speeds. I have a 74' and had to grind down the cover a little to get it to clear. Wern't no big deal.
