Just bought a 76 ironhead sportster, lots not right with this bike but I would like to correct everything, just as soon as th money allows, so here are a few basic ?'s I need answers to like what is the correct oil to run in sump/crankcase. Also what are the proper plugs for this bike, next, if someone put straight pipes on it without rejetting the carb will it do harm. Last but not least, what about tranny fluid, if different from crank oil. I have a manual on the way but am doing research in the meantime, any help weould be appreciated. ps-cylinders need repainting also, can I use any good flat black heat resistant paint------------HELP!!!!!!!!!!

1. HD Formula+. This is a new synthetic that replaces SportTrans. There are lots of other choices but this is a good one.
2. NGK BPR 6HS
3. Probably not. The pilot screw may need to be adjusted to run a little richer. If the plugs are too white looking and/or if there is a backfire rap when you let off the throttle then richening up the pilot screw setting is the solution.
4. Tranny fluid and crank oil are the same thing. Ther are two oils, one for the engine in the oil tank and the other in the primary for the primary chain, trans, etc.
5. Many guys use BBQ paint. Any automotive engine paint marked on the label for 1200`F or higher will do. The 1500`F and 1600`F paints have more difficult application instructions.
If it says engine paint but does not give a temperature or says about 600`F then it will burn off quickly around the exhaust ports and between the fins - regardless of what the counter guy might say. This paint is only for liquid cooled engines.
1. Crankcase/sump oil= motoroil I have used 20W-50 warm conditions 50W or 60W
2. Champion H8C, Nippondenso W16LS, Harley Davidson R4 or NGK as Mike wrote.
3. Readjusting carb is thing that you must do, straight pipes isn't good option.
4. In primary/transmission there should be Sportster Transmission Fluid.
5. Zink based primer and normal paint holds nicely..
