Default forward control problems

OK, so after a wonderful long ride yesterday I have discovered a problem...the 75 sportster I have, that had forward controls on it when I bought it rests my right leg on top of the oil cap. That sucker gets hot after a while. when I got home I didn't have a blister on the back of my leg, but it was bright red!!! What do I need to move the controls back to the original placement and where do I get them? I assume that the pegs stick out of the frame are for the controls, but with everything move forward, what length shifter extension do I need, can I just adjust the brake wire to the length after it has been moved buy cutting it? etc. Thanks guys. And if anyone could, would you please post some pics of what it is supposed to look like. you guys rock!

Tell us, does your shift lever come out of the timing cover on the right side, and does the brake pedal on yours sit on the left side?

OK, you have the model that was the 'transition year' for Harley to move the shift to the left side to meet the Fed's mandate.

They accomplished this by using a God-Awful collection of hardware. I am not familiar with the parts myself, but other members know it well.

Someone chime in here with some help for jswhitex............ pg

Somewhere recently i saw a post about a complete parts list that you need to do this. I do not recall where. Darn! Anyway, such a list does exist. Check with J&P Cycles. Their tech guys are said to be very helpful.

good news/bad news.

I've got exactly what you need; the parts diagram and the listing of all the parts for the shifter linkage. Problem is I can't figure out how to post it here. Send me an email to carlgrover@bellsouth.net and I will reply with the jpg of what you need or somebody tell me how to post the diagram. The file size is about 400 kg which is way to big for me to attach. I don't have a URL to get it from so that doesn't help either.

OK, so were on the right track with getting what I need to move the controls (thanks Carl) but now I have a question...has anyone else ran into this problem of your leg sitting on the oil cap and getting burnt? I know I am a big guy and I have very big legs, but am I the only one?

It is common to get your leg burned from contact with the oil tank.
