Well after a bit of R&R in the NC mountains (on a new-to-me Transalp) I been wrenchin' on the XLS. Got to the point of determining whether the cam timing was correct. I always like to do this before I put any oil in. Just wanna hear it pull a bit on both cylinders. And that takes some careful listening. (more on the ignition timing later)
I can only imagine the umpteen dozen reasons windbag "experts" will offer as to why one should never do this. HAHAHAHAHA!
I do it on every engine I've ever assembled, and tomorrow I dumps some oil in and lets her idle a bit. Of course, I'll add a carbie and gasoline, just to keep things under control. When you anoint the intake manifold with starting juice, you got no steenking control over the throttle.
