I don't want to high jack your thread. But I have similar problems. I have a 1970 ironhead with the distributor styl points set up. Will only run a few seconds at a time. And hard to get started at all. Is kick start only. Any advice?
If it does run for a few seconds then it is getting spark, and is probably running on just the fuel in the combustion chamber. I would check the fuel in the tank [is it fresh?], and the fuel path from the tank to the carb [dismantle, clean, inspect the petcock, the fuel filter, and the fuel line].
To refurbish the petcock you will have to empty the tank and remove the petcock. A good opportunity to clean and inspect the tank [remove the accumulated crud at the bottom] and install fresh gas.
Once you are confident in this part and see how it runs we can go on to what it needs next.
Try this with points. set your gap at .018 on the sharp front lobe, double check gap on the wide lobe. Set the weights in the advance position .I use a O ring between the bolt and lobe plate and turn it CW to advance the weights.friction holds the weights advanced
Get motor on #1 compression stroke and locate the vertical line in the inspection hole. Insert a piece of cig paper between the points with the points closed ,rotate plate CW if necessary.
Now, rotate the plate CCW untill the cig just slides out, lock the plate down, remove the O ring and reinstall bolt
