I have a similar problem that my 84 ironhead has . When the bike warms up the idle goes up, when I put the bike in gear, let the clutch out and pull back in the clutch the idle goes back to normal. It seems when I put a load on her she is okay. If I let her sit in idle she is okay when I give her some gas is when I have this problem I have a s&s carb.The bike runs great and starts great but this problem is just getting to me. The cables are good and the throttle linkage comes back Thanks guys for some help
I think Could be two things first the fast idle out of nowhere;
I carry a small pocket flat head screw driver with me until I can find someone to fab a throttle **** handle for my S&S. It is in the directions manual and seems to be true that after you get the bike fired up and running steady that you will have to adjust the idle after a good 20 minuet ride, sometimes for me its sooner depending on the outdoor temperature BUT, I ALWAYS have to adjust the screw. I start out with a RPM of 1100-1200, by the time I get 2 miles down the road to a light my idle can jump to 1800. To test this I left the idle the way it was after the previous day of riding. If I leave the screw set to a hot bike I have to warm it up more using the enricher before I roll out or she WILL stall. From doing oil burner work I would gather the fuel will be used better/easier in a hot motor as cold fuel is difficult to burn when suspended in large droplets as well as it has a tendency to stick to the cylinder walls as opposed to being burnt up. In the other thread when talking about Mikunis I feel they have a better design for atomizing the fuel before it makes its way to the cylinder.
Second thing, bike returns to idle slowly even after closing the throttle;
Check your accelerator pump settings, I don't have the book in front of me but I think the base setting is clockwise till seated than back off two full turns. Crack the throttle to see if the bike stumbles or bogs down before continuing to back off the screw. After setting the screw check that the butterfly door shuts easliy and doesn't hang up.
Thanks x man, pinion said the same statement with the butterfly. I am going to look at the butterfly when it stops raining. Now for the adjustment when she warms up you have to carry a screwdriver so you can adjust doesn't make sense to me So basicaly I should leave it set up for a hot motor.There has to be some kind of simple logic to this Thanks for assisting

There should be and adjustment for your throttle cables up at the grip. Loosen the nut and move the adjustment piece in or out to put tension on the cable. It should be loose enough that when you let go it SNAPS back into a closed position.
Also have you lubed the cables lately? Check for routing to make sure it's not binding up as it makes its way to the carb body.
I have a feeling your accelerator pump setting is out of adjustment (if cables are found to be free). When mine was far to open it seemed like the bike would not come down to a 1100-1200 idle when I approached a light until maybe 10-15 seconds after sitting there. I adjusted the pump setting and it went away.
The screw driver;
I am pretty sure they tell you in the set up instructions to warm the bike up and adjust if needed after a short ride. I dont think it matters if you leave it set up on a hot idle and warm up the bike.
The cables are free and the linkage on the carb goes back and sits on the screw. Now that you mention the accel pump mine was screwed out 9 turns when I got the bike and she would drop raw fuel into the manifold. I turned it in alot but don"t remember how many Thanks

Turn accelerator pump adjustment to closed position and then open it by 1/2 turn, most cases that is enough. If not, bike will hesitate in acceleration (dead spot) then open adjustment by 1/4 turn until it runs well.
Great day today and took her out and checked the pump she was 1.5 turns out and I turn her in 3/4 turn and turned out the idle and checked the butterfly and everything seems good for now. I will take her out tommorow to see how she is Thanks Again
