Default fork oil specs

I have installed a 73-80 lowrider front end on my 73 XLCH. I was preparing to purchase oil and fill forks, so I referred to my manual.
My Sportster manual. Then I thought, uh, lowrider front end! After reafing a bit (how much different can they be? Right,) I also came upon the filling specs. This leaves me with 2 questions.

1. Can I use the same oil as I would if I had a sportster front end?.

2. How do I know if I have a 'wet' or 'dry' fork?

3. Does the lowrider take the same amount of oil(wet or dry) as the sportster?

Guess that was 3 questions , not 2 huh?

If anyone has info it would be greatly appreciated.

Should I try the shovel forum?

Well, I found that wet means for a change of oil. You can never ge ALL of the oil out, hence wet.Dry for new or re-built forks, because they are completely dry. As far as actual quantity, I'm still not sure.

Thanks!

I looked a little more and found this.

I searched the internet for this info and found there wasn't anything out there. Most of us don't have a harley manual anymore! "Dry fork requires .5 to 1.0oz more than the wet amount due to residual oil left clinging inside the fork." Use 20 weight for average conditions. For extreme conditions use 10 weight or 30 weight accordingly."-WET: Means you just drained the oil out of the plug and want to refill it.-DRY: Means you dissassembled the forks and cleaned them dry inside/out.WET.....DRY(oz)............MODEL/YEAR..5.5 to 6.5Sportster thru 1972

Well I hope this helps atleast one person out. Cheers.

This came fron another thread. Thought someone here may find it useful . I know I did!

If anyone has input on what weight they prefer, I would still appreciate some insight.

Thanks!

In my experience these are too heavy. I have always used 15W in all my bikes [Honda Shadows, Yamaha Viragos, Evo and Iron Sportsters]; and this is heavier than stock fork oil for all of these bikes. They put an HD spec fork oil in my current ironhead when they changes the fork seals - i believe it is about 5W, and it feels just fine.

ent to the local dealer and specified that I wanted fork oil equivalent to 5wt. They gave me Harley type E oil. Does that sound about right?
