can i tell which one my motor came off of just by looking at the serial number?
Or does it even matter?
Also, I'm running my forward control cable back to the rear brake and i have a bracket that mounts to the frame that holds the cable. I have a spare brake from a 75 that has a little holder built into teh backing plate, could i swap that out?

I don't know ANY difference between XLH and XLCH frame in 73-78... if that is your frame (on your signature) that is customized... weld on hardtail, rake change.
i built one last year just like your bike. when i installed my hardtail, it was a bolt on, that i welded on..........the c-shaped bracket on your drum cover used to hold the cable sheathing would not work with my forwards. i found a cover that was missing that c-shaped bracket (or you can just cut it off, then polish it. i actually welded a small c-shaped bracket on my rear right frame tube and cut off an additional 4 inches or so from the cable sheathing. this allowed a solid mount on the framefor the sheathing to grab on while my cable pulled the rear brake drum lever.............worked great!
