I checked batery volts and conections, volts are good ,cell test is good.took starter off to inspect brushes and all looks good.I dont think this is a starter issue it turns over fine about two or three turns and then trys to kick out or lock up .it makes a hard thunk .I can let off the switch and hit it again and she will turn and crank no problem, Iam takeing off primary cover for inspection I have my manule but is their specific problem area related to the starter drive in the case that I should look for ? thanks again for all the help.

But did you do a load test? A battery can have a full 12 or 14 volts and immediately run down to 10 or less when you push the button; if that is the case the battery is no good, and you get symptoms similar to what you have described.

2B. Load test battery.
It is said that, with electronic ignition, you should never crank the engine without grounded plugs attached to the wires. For this test you should install an extra set of plugs into the wires and set them onto the top cylinder head fins.
Disconnect both spark plugs. Attach voltmeter leads to the battery terminals. Crank the engine for 10 seconds [no more!]. Observe the meter WHILE cranking. If it goes below 10 volts then the battery is no good. Alternatively you can buy a battery load tester.
