I was considering offering 2K and goin from there..I really want the springer and the kick/electric start..Around Dallas it seems a running Iron brings around 2500 up.But I aint in a hurry..Thanks for the opinion!

Yeah, IMHO 3K is too much, but I agree with starting with an offer of 2K and seeing what the reaction from the seller is. If he gets a whiff of blood (realizes you want it badly)... that is not going to be something in your favor, so act coldly when doing the deal.
Always remebmber...... on a Sportster there can easily be problems with piston scoring and/or valve problems, regardless of how well it has been cared for.
Good luck with it and let us know if you wind up with a winter project.

i would say it is/could be worth 3k.
my thing is maybe you would be better off finding a pile of parts and going from there.the money that you would save initially could be used to make sure you have a solid engine.also to buy extra stuff for new build and you will be that much further ahead.if you are gonna make a chopper you will be swapping frames and probably wheels and controls and drag bars and seats and probably alot of stuff you dont even need off that bike.just my 2 cents.good luck either way.
Well,I just got home from looking at it..140 p.s.i both jugs,Engine sounds great, new battery, nice tires..but surface rust on all the chrome. The tranny shifts great, the odometer has to be wrong cuz it says 12K.Its a XLH I think, the vin has 3A rather than 4A so I assume the kicker was added.(i was hoping for XLCH)
I offered 2K rather reluctantly..crying about the rust..She came back with 2800.00
I walked..still wanted to ask You all first! I'm sure I can ride it home for 2500.00
But...it wouldn't take much to put it back to stock. If it was right side shift I would jump on it!Hate to chop this one..and thats what I wanted to do.hmmm
Thanks for the guidance so far!

Yeah, a 3A is an XLH for sure. And the kick start has been added for sure too, I would guess.
Having a coat of rust is bad also, as the seller will soon discover. Unless you want to run a rat bike, then I guess rusty adds to the charm (?).
The resale value takes a big hit with rust. You did good to walk away from it in my opinion. They may well sell it for $2500, but I would hold out for the 2 grand tops. That will allow you to spend $500 on new chrome pieces if you decide to do so.

Surface rust just comes off easily and itself is not a problem. Is it from a historical lack of care [bad]? Or is it "merely" from sitting unused for a time period [not so bad]?
