Default wiring turn signals?

1975 ironhead. turn signals won't work. They lite up with the brake lite when the rear brake is engaged. I don't know much about wiring a bike, but I know the turn signal aren't supposed to do that! I don't have any wiring diagrams, and even if I did, I don't know that I would understand them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Here is the wiring diagram and call outs for a 1974. The 1975 is going to be the same...................

Just follow the wire circuits for the turn signals on the diagram as you follow them on your machine..
You will be looking on the bike for wires incorrectly connected to the rear brake light circuit or a short from frayed wiring.

The wiring diagram may seem confusing but it should not be.
Each line is like a garden hose carrying water except it denotes a wire carrying 12V electricity.
Check your turn signal switches for continuity.
Check the wires for continuity as you check over each one.
Problems occur at connection points most of the time. Second to that is bad switches or frayed wire insulation.

Just flipping through my own manual's diagrams here, and the two diagrams are very similar between 84/85 - you will notice some differences it looks like, but the premise is the same. Your left and right turn signal switches are both going to be "wired together" on one leg, which is attached to a turn signal flasher mechanism. I don't think this is where your problem is.

The OTHER leg of your wiring for your turn signal switches goes to their corresponding signal lights - that is, the right switch goes to the right tail light, etc. If you follow this wire just by looking at it / following with your hands / etc., it should ultimately wind up leading to your signal lights.

I'm betting your signal lights are all wired into your rear brake light switch (#14 on PG's handy diagram). They could be wired directly to the switch in some way (this would be obvious, because it looks like only two wires would be coming off that device immediately), or it could be spliced in along the line somewhere (#'s 31 and 32 on PG's diagram).

I'm going to guess it's wired wrong on the rear harness, because that just makes sense to me. I know how working on electric "stuff" can be really confusing, especially for somebody who doesn't / hasn't done it much before, but you can do it with patience.

Hope this helped break things down for you a little bit. Good luck!
