A problem with no acc pump is that you can not always accelerate quickly with sudden throttle openings. You have to roll it on. If you have been riding with such a carb for a long time you get used to this and do not notice - until you ride with an accelerator pump carb.

The only problem I've seen with them is when people try to repeatedly blip the throttle at lights. If your carb is properly tuned cracking the throttle wide open while in gear is no problem because the bike rolls into acceleration anyway. The accelerator pump does come in handy on cold mornings when your in the driveway at 5a.m. trying to kick her over though.

I replaced the HD carb (with adjustable XLR main jet ) with a new S&S on my 1970 XLCH (77 CU IN ) in about 1975. This was a new S&S with no accel. pump, started great and ran a little better at low speed, couldn't touch the HD carb with the accel. pump for performance. That pump is what gives you the "seat of the pants" power.

It must just be a tuning issue. I have spent time tuning and tweaking and have no problems keeping up with 1200 Sporties all the way through the range with no acc pump.

Is that Your bike in the picture? If so it sure got burnt bad.
Looks like a challenge there.. I would recommend the Mikuni VM38..find a used one for cheap or a Shorty E..Bendex, all good carbs.
