I have a gas tank that needs to get repainted due to my fault. I bought the new harley stickers and the painter gave me a quote of 500 bucks. Now my question is that when I took the tank off I noticed rust on the bottom and some sealer is starting to flake off. For a new tank is 1100 bucks this is for my 98 superglide with your experience with tanks I hope you guys can give me an idea which way to go, new tank or just get repainted. thanks I do have a ironhead
$500 is a lot to paint a tank. I had one refurbished recently for $300. I had a complate set [fuel & oil tanks and both fenders] done with stripes and decals for $350.
Was the sealer flaking off inside the tank? If it is like Kreme tank sealer you could ask around to see if anyone can remove it, but i think it would be trash.
Rust inside or outside? My limited experience with fuel tanks is that once they are perforated with rust they are trash. Brazing, welding, etc the bad spots - other spots come undone soon after.
I would look for a used tank on eBay. Some say that eBay is risky - i have made at least 75 purchases over the past 5 years and never a bad deal.
outside looks great but there is some surface rust on the sides and on the bottom the grey paint on the inside has some flakes coming off. I am the original owner and purchased this bike in oct 97 The bike runs fine just worring about future problems
