Default Sheared starter gear

Got the 76 back together today, went to fire it up and nothing but that awful ratcheting that leaves an empty feeling in your gut. Pulled the starter off to find all teeth about half gone. I did find a Hitachi replacement for 70 bucks but of course I have to wait on snail mail. Problem is, what the hell is causing it? It does kickback pretty good at times but I'm not sure it means the timing is off. It runs well enough that I doubt it. With the plugs out, the sheared starter would still spin the motor but when I put'em back in, it ratchets. I don't wanna shell out another starter so....any ideas? Thanks

You are right about timing, it's off if engine kicks back.. check it first. Bike runs nicely when timing is too much advanced, but starts badly.

I think I got the timing right now. I found TDC, then used the ohm meter to adjust the points with the small lobe so that you can open and close the circuit by pushing the cam back and forth with your finger. I'm told the small and large lobe should be within .002 of each other but I haven't checked it yet. It's still not running perfect but it's getting there. It will idle now anyway. Took it out on the highway and wound her up. Seems like there should be a little more. Slight miss at high rpm too. I guess I'll check the valves and have another look at the carb. Oh, I was also told to check the counter weights behind the points. Plenty to tinker with yet. It felt good to finally get out and ride a bit though.
