Wehn I stop at a convience store, gas station or a short (10-15min) stop somewhere and then restart the bike, it backfires, sometime a small one and sometimes a large one. It always starts right up but the backfire is disturbing. I am not using any choke or touching the throttle. I am mostly worried about doing damage to the starter or the engine. Could this be an indication that I am running rich?
Happens to me almost all the time. Again today when I stoped for gas, quick stop then went to restart and the starter hit and then the bike kicked and the starter disengaged. Another quick burp of the starter got things going but it wounds like crap when it happens. Its like the engine stops just before the spark and when the starter turns its just a small part of a revolution before the spark hits and kicks the starter off.
It happens enough that I am starting to think it is not normal.
I've had it happen once or twice. Shouldn't be any worries unless it pops then cranks for a real long time afterwards. Barking backwards thru the carb would be a whole different story or course.
Mine also has done it a few times also,I haven't been concern andby thelook of some of the replys it sounds common. Would be interested to see if anyone has found a solution.
The pop or backfire out the pipes is not an issue, in fact it is sometime rather humorous. It happend once at a gas station that was a huge echo chamber and I swear three people almost hit the deck when it went off. The only issue with it is that it sometimes kicks the starter off the gear and that sounds like crap. It sounds like gear grinding and the starter disengages. I jsut worry about damaging the starter. Since it appears to be common I wont worry about it. (for now)
