Are you keeping the choke on while running down the road?

Even a notch of choke will give you a rise in idle. A little more choke and the system stalls when warm. I've even noticed the choke vibrating slightly closed and raising the idle as I drive if it's not completely opened when warm.

IF it's a new issue I'd look into a good carb rebuilding and adjustment (set-up).

I had the bike about 3 years and did some tinkering with the bike and noticed that after it gets warmes up the idle increases and if I hit the throttle and feather the cluth in and out in gear as I come to a lite the idle goes back to normal I did check the cables for binding and turning the front end and no increase. What do you mean by mechanical advance and what to look for Thanks( S&S super e )

If there has been a points conversion or the like, you might want to check the mechanical advance that would have been fitted along with that, in the cam cover timer area.
If it still has elec ign, then it will not have one.

Hey mick can I just take out the plate without adjusting anything else? I want to see the weights behind the plate. I would scrawl the plate and the sides before removing is this possible? Thanks

I have very little experience with points setups. I converted both of my IronHeads to electronic ignition soon after i got them.

I did use the video - i went thru it slowly, made notes and little diagrams, and eventually figured out what they mean by the lobes, and got it set up OK.

Also was it easy to convert thanks again for your help. I want to get this done during the winter months

I installed a Crane Hi-4 on my 1980, and later an Ultima on my 1978. There are other well known brands as well. Crane is no longer in business but another company [S&S ?] is manufacturing the product. The Ultima is very popular these days because it costs less and is a good product.

Best is to buy a kit that contains the EI module, the ignition coil, and the spark plug wires.

The installation and static timing of either of these is very simple. Bolt it iunto the timing case, run the wire up to the coil by the same route that the stock wire now runs. With the Ultima you have to drill out larger the hole for the wire but it is easy to do.

Twintec also (my experience) good electronic ignition.

basically same kind of system as "old" Crane Hi-4, plus you can load your own ignition/advance map into module. If you have service cable.
