Default wiring

what do u guys think about riping out the factory wiring harness and running a custom wiring to fuses instead of messing with all the factory crap its just a thought.

Factory wiring, in my experience with an '80 and a '78, is still good unless it has been seriously messed up by POs. It is simple enough to test each circuit for voltage drop between the circuit breaker and any points along the way.

Another option is to replace it with a reproduction wire harness from J&P Cycles or whereever. These have all correct colors and lengths. I have heard that installing one is relatively easy.

Third option ...

If you are planing to do wiring from groundup, here is tip for you: there is wire sets that are meat for trailer builders. It has 5-7 yards long connection cable where is inside 7 different colour wires... good option to use as base. Ofcource you need to put some "hevier" cables too.

Ya gotta tell us what year the bike is. You need a factory service manual and a factory parts catalog - the service manual has full color wire diagrams [for 79 to 85]. The Haynes has full color diagrams for all years.

There are two whites, a yellow and a black for the headlite itself.

A white, a gray and a black to the run switch/start button

All orange wires on the bike are 12 volt with the key on. There is an orange wire connector in the headlite bucket with one going in, one looping, and a few going out.

Pink probably for an electronic tach.

Red could be the light in the tach and speedo.

I think that, most of the time, only people who could never wire a bike correctly think it is a good idea to rip out the HD wiring, and (supposedly) wire it better(normally by removing an electric start that they cannot fix, and eliminating obviously stupid things, like the kill switch, or ignition breaker).

Default Wiring

I have a long term project, a softail, that is going to get wired from the ground up with an Optima wiring harness, but working with a stock bike i think is easier to try working with what we have on the bike. I have replaced cable connections only when i have to on mine, dont feel bad, 3 1/2 months ago when i got my bike i had 3 electrical issues to work on, now that they are solved am on motor tunning.
