Welcome.

at this point the generator being fried, i see signs of the bolts and area being hot, am not sure i would want to fix it, not that you can not fix it, just that you said the guy testing it did not know how.
I would buy a new one with a regulator and put it on, they are not expensive, and follow repair manual instructions for that year model. MAKE DAM SURE YOU POLARIZE IT, and go riding around showing off my drag pipes

thanks neal. the cycle electric one is expensive! but i think my generator itself is probably ok, just need a new reg. so once i install the reg, hopefully that does the trick and be sure to polarize it (duly noted) and then i should be back on the road. pissed off because these last 3 days have been great weather for riding here in no cal and i missed out because of this lame s!@#! i should be right when this next wave of storms is over though.

your ride looks really good, dont give up on her, i have very minor issues with mine that i got about 4 months ago, ( i just want a better idle ) and am working on that, but am thankful that the bike runs like a mean bitch down the road.
Read and download all the free advice you are getting, it help me so much with mine.

At least with the charging system there is not so much to backtrack, let us know everything you do and the more knowlegable will jump in with advice for u.

Great luck.

There are two bearings in the gen. The needle bearing in the outer end is easy to replace - just tap the old one out and tap the new one in [grease it so it goes in more easily], using a hammer and an appropriate sized socket.

The armature shaft bearing must be pressed out/in. If you do not have access to a press i would not replace it unless it really needs to be, which is unlikely. One guy i spoke with managed with a vice or a long clamp or whatever.

I had that same experience with a brush just coming off the wire one time.

There is lots of info on refurbishing the gen in the factory service manual 99484-78, and a parts diagram in the factory parts catalog 99451-78B. You should have both of these.

On eBay you can find them OEM NOS still in the shrink wrap for about $50 or on CD for about $25. J&P Cycles also have them for about $50/$60. HD Dealers also have them probably $more.

I found these by searching for the part numbers. All are ButItNow so you do not have to bid etc.

Those CD's are usually "pirates" so think about that $25... empty CD-R disk is about 5c...
Of cource there is good sides and bad side in CD's, do you have computer next your workshop bench ? if not you need go and look manual from screen or print needed pages to paper. Otherwise CD is very handy to use...
