If this bike went through Alabama and it was 1976 or before, he didn't need a title to register it. All he needed was a bill of sale. Alabama was the stolen vehicle capital of the world back then. My 1973 XLCH was stolen back then. I got it back 2 years later but I had to sue for it. It actually had been titled by the guy using just a bill of sale. Because I insisted on a police report when it was stolen (the police didn't want to make one) the National Crime Information Center computer kicked it out when this guy went to buy tags for it. I got it back and restored it and still have it. I hope it all works out for you. You'll love the right side shift. Old school. Good luck.

I gave the guy a call to get the VIN and he wouldn't give it up so I am walking away.

I found an 83 that I might take a look at. The current owner says the generator light is on. From what I have read that won't be too big of a deal. He says it runs great and doesn't use too much oil. He is looking for 2300 seems like a pretty good price to me. What do you guys think?

Gen light on probably means the brushes are stuck. Easy to fix with a take-apart&clean. Worst case the armature is toast and you can get it fixed at a local auto-electric shop or buy a replacement gen.

I found that the gen light shows itself a little at idle on mine, I learned not to pay too much attention to it because as soon as the throttle goes on it disappears, I have not ran down the battery so I guess there is some normality to this on low RPM.

Yes, it is normal for the gen light to come on at idle. Unlike alternators, generators do not charge at idle. Mine is faint enough that it only shows up at night.

Try to get the '83 for $2000, never hurts to ask, you can always go back up. Walk away from the '73.
