Default not shifting properly

its an 81--first time riding bike after doing some work to it(rebuilt starter, tires and i painted the tank)--- long story short, my bike fell over when i had the primary cover off to remove the starter.it fell towards the primary side.today i took it out briefly and i shifted up through all gears without even noticing a problem but when i went to down shift it will down shift but the foot lever will not pop back up without letting off the clutch.-----------arrrrgh.

edit-whats my next step?im assuming somthing is slightly bent.whats the chances of this correcty itself?or getting worse?

Have you adjusted clutch ? does it work correctly ? what kind of oil you are using in primary/transmission.

i adjusted the clutch but i did notice that it was not as "clunky" when going into 1st......and probably going through the gears now that i think about it.it shifted good though.--i will readjust clutch asap.
i use formula +1 i get at the hd dealer.has always worked good for me.

i hope readjusting the clutch will work--my junior high school coach(ex marine) use to make us run,we would finish no problem then he would just add an xtra mile for no reason without notice and immediatly you will become tired because youre mind accepted the fact you were finished------------------------its stupid but this bike reminds me of those times alot.

dadgummit!-----i ignored the obvious.when it fell over it bent the shifter a little...i straightened it immediatly and it also bent a homemade peg extender a little so i took it off and re straightened it(1/4 inch steel) but i must have put it back on the outside where i suppose i had it on the inside of the bracket.that was over a week ago------i dont know why i didnt even look at that after i had trouble.i see people on here ignoring the most obvious things but i am guilty of it as well....not by choice.i feel pretty stupid but i am happy....and i got a newly adjusted clutch lol
