Default Possible clutch/transmission problem...

I have noticed recently that maybe 75% of the time when I shift from 1st to 2nd it feels like (for want of a better term) I'm catching a couple of gear teeth. Does not do that shifting into any of the other gears. Clutch lever freeplay is correct, bike is easy to pop into neutral, basically everything feels 'normal' other than 1st to 2nd. It does it cold or hot, and I've never hammered the shifter so I can't believe I've personally damaged anything. The bike is approaching 9500 miles, I have never adjusted the the clutch other than lever freeplay, but the clutch feels like it always has.

BTW, I'm running Redline 75w90 in the primary.

You might want to go inside the derby cover and check the adjustment of the clutch rod. That would be a first step, then see how it goes from there. That's not the same as adjusting the lever free play. Always adjust inside the cover first, then adjust lever free play.

You should be running 20W-50 oil in the transmission / primary.

That's great oil for the primary case/transmission. I'm using Mobil1 75W-90. Redline is top notch stuff. I've just been too cheap to use it myself.

I adjusted the clutch, and took the bike out for a while. The 'problem' is 98% cured as it only did it once or twice the whole time I was out. Maybe it's just the nature of the beast and I just began to notice it more.

Question I have is, what is considered normal for adjusting the clutch? I turned the adjuster about 7/8 or so of a turn CCW until it seated, then backed it off 1/4 turn CW. Is 7/8 to 1 complete turn excessive, or does that sound about normal for a clutch with 9500 miles on it? I don't know if the dealer adjusted it when they did the 1000 mile service, I do know I've never adjusted it other than adjusting the lever freeplay once at 5,000 miles.

I just followed the instructions in this video. Easy.

edit: also, aren't you due for a primary chain adjustment as well at that mileage?

That is the video I watched before adjusting it. My question was meant to be, is 7/8 or 1 complete turn excessive or about a normal amount. Delboy didn't go into any of that in his video.

As far as the primary chain, I checked and adjusted it last spring when I did the 5,000 mile service, I'm coming up on the 10,000 mile service so I'll check it again then.

Ah ok cool. Can't answer your question then. I did exactly as shown and it worked out ok.

re: chain. I was just thinking that might be a cause for the sloppyness if loose chain. best of luck.

The instructions for adjusting your clutch are in your FSM, also in the Tech Primary section of HDF. As with so many things in life, practice makes perfect and you may find that having done it a couple of times you get things 'just so'!
