Single fire is better. Single fire ignitions fire just one plug at a time and that is the one on the compression stroke.
Traditionally, all HDs have had dual fire ignitions. This means that both spark plugs fire at the same time, the one on the compression stroke [which we want], and the other on whatever stroke it is on - i expect the exhaust stroke. The problem is that there may be unburned fuel in that cylinder so that to some extent the engine will be working against itself.
This controversial; some guys say you will never notice the difference. Most guys report noticing smoother idle and a performance gain - but this is not considered scientific by the other side of the controversy.
