clutch spring
I am in process of doing the kickstart bushings and seal on my 77 xlch.I have removed the primary cover and I looked at the primary chain adjuster and noticed it didnt look like what i excpected. It had only the bolt and nut on the bottom of the primary cover for a tensioner. Is this normal, in the book (clymer) it says "remove the front chain adj brace and 3 chain adj screws" in which i dont see anywhere in there.
Now I installed H-D 97178-71 spring compression tool, removed the nuts on releasing disc and removed disc. Now it says in manual remove the inner and outter springs.Mine only had one ,a big one. I removed the driven plate and preasure plate all looks well it is all ALTO's so they must have been replaced which leaves me wondering about the primary chain tensioner and the single spring in the clutch.
Should i locate these parts? or are they supposed to be there?
is this single spring in the clutch supposed to be a single? could this be a upgrade?
thanks for your time in advance!

Clymer.... when that book is made they have used older model as reference, 77 came new cases and new primary. There isn't compensating sprocket and as you wrote primary chain adjustment is under primary outside of case with one locking nut and adjustment screw.
Gear lever is doing though primary cover...
In middle of clutch release plate there can be one or 2 springs, older models has 6 springs under release plate... under or how I say... around those 6 tappets what fastens that release plate.

Yes I understand in 77 they were new cases, a sealed case so to say.But I expected two springs in middle of clutch, as you say i have herd it before oh them clymers they are old, new lol, hey it is working for me so far. And the clutch has worked fine in the past so enough with that unless you can tell me the correct length of this single spring?
As for the chain tensioner ,so they never had any other kind of tension bracket or nothing other then the bolt and nut on bottom of primary on this yr?
Thanks all when this is done on to installing the ultima ignition....

You should get the factory manuals, the service manual 99484-78 and the parts catalog 99451-78B. Then you will know for sure that you have correct parts. These two manuals are the most important tools of an ironhead owner.
You do have the correct primary chain adjuster. There are single and dual spring setups, so you do not have a missing part there.

Thank you IronMick, I am going to get a factory service manual.
Living a few hrs north of the bay kinda sucks when you need stuff.Still hoping to do Dover on the 13th if i get this all back together lol.

One more question , has anyone used or seen a Hayden M-6 primary chain tensioner.I have seen pics thought i would purchase but just went to town and the guy tried to order threw motovan and they say its discountinued.Sure looks like it would work great and save a lil clunking.
Always more, and as i looked at my list of part #'s he could not order i seen that the kicker bushings were among them.I see them on *bay but takes so long went to Bensons auto found a 3/4x7/8 1 inch long bushing and another 1 1/4 long the long one fit well in the sprocket cover and the other fit well in the left case.I slid in the kicker shaft and voila she's nice just right. So 2 bushings at bensons $4 sweet.Just got a Bensons in kirkland lk.My kicker worked very well before but should work better as there was a fair bit of play on the left side, I hope i fixed the dam oil leak it would drip 3 four drops after a ride.I cleaned and whiped and clean and always seamed to come from kicker seal.
