I received the new motor stud in the mail today. Went out to the garage to compare it to the old stud and I found out that the side that takes the nut is not the correct threading but the stud is the correct threading for the stud hole.
My heads, jugs, frame, swingarm, primary cover, and cam cover will be done at the powder coater on Friday. So hopefully I can get some stuff done this weekend.
Has anyone ever heard of Threebond 1194 liquid gasket? I was thinking of useing that to put the two case halves back together. Also is there any specail things I should know about for the engine gasket set when useing all of the gaskets? I didn't know if there is any pre-soaking envolved.
Anyone got any ideas I can do to try and bring some "pop" to my old mag rims? Anyone know of any places that sell aftermarket rims for an 83 sporty?
I am not familiar with the 1194 number. But i have heard many times on these forums that the products ThreeBond, YammaBond, and HondaBond are identical products with different names, all made by 3M, and all correct for bonding the case halves.
You should verify this from another source, and check that there are not various ThreeBonds with different numbers.
As a general rule i install gaskets dry, especially if that is what is specified in the factory service manual. If you do not have one yet you should not proceed until you have one, and that you have studied it thoroughly - 99484-85; 99451-85A for the parts catalog which you also need.
Gaskets which are installed vertically [gearcase cover, carb, etc] i stick in place with a small amount of Permatex Hylomar; just enough to hold it in place.
When installing the cylinders, heads and manifold, do not final tighten the base nuts and head bolts until after the manifold is installed and final tightened. This will help to get the best possible line up of the manifold and head flanges. To facilitate this use a small amount of the Hylomar on the bottom surface only of the base gaskets so that they stay in place while you shift the cylinders/heads assembly to get the best position. Then final tighten the nuts, bolts and clamps alternately checking mani/head lineup as you go.
Some guys use gasket sealer on many or all gaskets. The Permatex copper based sealer is popular. It is usually referred to as Copper Coat but the name has changed. It comes in a spray can which i find very inconvenient. The Hylomar is also used in this way and would be my choice. I agree with this only if there is a technical reason for doing so, such as poor gasket surfaces, history of leaks, etc.
When installing the gearcase and primary covers i first temporarily install 3 studs made from 3" bolts with the heads cut off. This gives you something on which to hang the gaskets, and assists with getting the covers to go on flat/straight.
Thanks Mick for all of the insight! It is much appreciated. Here are some more pics of the progress. Got the frame, swing arm, jugs, heads, rocker covers back from coating. They came out beautiful. I'm in the process of reassembling the engine now and hopefully get it back on the frame by the weekend. The move date is coming up soon and I need to find a good pause point... Can you all check the timing marks for me, I'm pretty sure I got them right but it's always good to get a second look.

After three months I'm now back underway with the rebuild and playing the waiting game with vendors...oh joy! Here is a whole slue of photos for you guys to get caught up on. Engine is back together in the frame, rims are out getting powder coated, tires are ordered, LONG ways to go. Starting the wiring process now
I thought you were just going to do the top end. That is one complete rebuild. Looks like you are doing a fantastic job.
Why did you split the cases?
Were the swing arm bearings worn out?
With as extensive a job you did on the engine, I'm assuming that you are giving the chassis the same treatment. Rebuilding the brakes, repacking wheel bearings, etc?
