My engine and trans are turning after marvelous in the cylinders and hand turning by me. While still up on blocks, with the plugwires pulled, would there be any problem with me using the battery from my car (while Not running),to test the turning of the motor? I would hook pos to pos cableand neg to neg cable, no motorcycle battery in between. if possible just touching neg cable to prevent starter from over running. Any thoughts? Im thinking I might want to try ry fourth gear to hear the trans and clutch mechanism working before firing it up. Im not 100%sure the size of my battery, it powers my 89 must LX 2.3 so its not real big. on the other hand I do have one from my partners 73 riv 455 if a bigger one is better.
The only difference battery size makes is if it is too small a capacity to do the job. A car battery is plenty of amps to take care of the bike of course.
Just be sure to attach the motorcycle wires to the jumper cables tightly.
Then connect the positive cable to the car battery post.
Last of all, connect the negative cable to the neg car post.
Use your key and start button to turn over the bike engine, just as if you had a motorcycle battery installed........pg
p.s: When you disconnect from the car battery, ALWAYS remove the negative cable last.

A real advantage to doing it this way, aside from simulating a true setup, is that you can have your hands on the bars for support. You're familliar with my recient troubles... my transmission was not right the first time I tried to start it and it shook the entire lift. If not for the tie-downs, it would have shaken itself off.
Thanks again for all your help. Good thinking on the key.Good point on the tie downs. Now I need the day to warm up a little bit from forty degrees. The joke at work is that about the time Im done it will be about forty degrees. I say they will laugh even more when they see me pull up to the stop sign and fall over frozen, smile on my face. Ill let you know...
