If the float doesn't seal I have had good luck with a q tip and some fine lapping compound to rough up the seat so the needle seals.

I did notice the float valve was different. I adjusted the float per FSM with a caliper I purchased, made it super easy.

Unfortunately I threw out the old float needle, it ended up getting carb cleaner on it.

Mick, I ended up doing exactly that, rolling the o-rings up on the carb and then letting it all fall into place. Probably easier without the carb attached to the manifold, or with that 3rd arm I've been meaning to get...

They are difficult to come by. No official HD part number. J&P Cycles does not list them. My indie mechanic has no supplier for them. I saw one on eBay one time but i was out bid.

Went to HD dealership for battery and they only sell them uncharged! They are charging it for me tonight. Did the oil changes and mounted the tank today. The radiator shop used redcoat, but they did a bad job of keeping the bore for the petcock screen clear so I had to rub some of the redcoat away to fit the petcock. Anyways tank is mounted and I am two spark plugs and a battery away from (hopefully) firing it up!

This has to be a sweet looking bike if it was only three years old when you're Dad parked it...

Can one replace the points and condenser without changing or adjusting the advance timing?

Here you go Seabee.

I'm usually not a big fan of HD bling but that eagle in the sissy bar is sick for that bike!

Are you feeling lucky ?

The long answer is:
  • adjusting the point gap will change the timing. How much, is the only question.
  • so, if you're lucky, you might be able to keep it close to what it was.
  • but how accurate was the timing before you went down this path ? Yeah, I know this ride was your dad's, but I think the question might still apply.
  • bottom line..... I'd suggest getting a timing light on it before running it for very long
I appreciate you're anxious to get this ride running, but having sat for 30 years, I'd also look into the "advance unit" at your next opportunity. If you are going to look at the advance unit, the time to do it is when you change the points. Going back in after the fact just creates a lot more work..... but it's your ride, do what works for you.

The advance unit shouldn't be wore out, but could probably use a little TLC. A general clean up & a re-lube of the pivot points, etc. should do. Follow the FSM.

A few tips during re-assembly:
  • it's critical to re-seat the advance unit properly..... and
  • don't snap off the "circuit breaker cam bolt". Think in terms of 1/4" drive ratchet with 9/16" socket (I think that bolt takes a 9/16" socket) & the pressure of two easy fingers.... anything more & that bolt will snap....... and now you're really screwed.
