I have never removed a front end as a complete assembly so i cannot comment on that. I have removed piece by piece. To drop the forks note that there are pinch bolts begind the lower fork cover which must be loosened; i recall a 9/16 open end wrench, fits under the cover so you do not need to remove that first. You must use a socket [1,3/8" i think] to remove the fork top caps. Best to not do this with an adjustable or any other tool.

I cannot see the fork stop/steering guard.

BTW, looks like the VIN area of the frame has been ground down? What is with that?

Thanks for the advice on the forks, I will keep you posted.

I think it's been just sanded/scratched so you can read the numbers.

edit:

this pic is more clear for the fork stop

The fork stop is the same as on my 1978, as is the rest of the front end especially the dual disk setup [1978 to 1983]. On the other side there should be a ring that is an integral part of the fork stop; this ring mates with the matching ring on the frame in your pic - these are for using a padlock to lock the bike.

As i mentioned previously, there is a large hole in your frame that appears to be for running the main wire harness thru the frame. I do not know if that is a stock feature or if a PO made that. I may or may not have seen it on other frames - it seems familiar but i do not know.

Best to post these pics on the other IronHead forum that i mentioned. There are more frame experts there who can clarify.

The important point is this - you have a motorcycle frame with an altered VIN. This is illegal in every state of the USA regardless of whether you have paper work. It is very important that you check this out before spending any money on this bike.

I would first check on the other forum, then check with your local motor vehicle department, and finally check with the police. Do not be surprised if the police confiscate the bike on the spot.

I am not an expert in these matters. This is my opinion based on my general knowledge garnered from these forums over the past several years. This is a very serious issue.

The 4th pic shows a scoop with a large hole front of frame bar at the steering head. I do not recognize that but it may be an earlier Sportster frame that i have not seen.

Pic 5: The engine mount between the cylinders hanging from the bar is previous to 1977. The dent above it looks home made, probably to mount a foreign fuel tank.

Hey Mick, my 73 is like that. Had to go out and refresh my memory on the hole area. I think the dent part is there also but can't see since the tank is on it now.
