Hello all.....My 77 sportster is due for a battery. Based on what I heard the best thing would be to get an agm battery. Those of you that have them, can you give me a link to where you got them from? I have looked at a few places and they don't have them specifically for the 1977 xlh. I imagine I could get one close to size and modify the box for it to fit on the bike. Is that what you have done? Or any place out there that has one that would fit without modifications? Thanks in advance. Jim
The smaller size is a blessing plus a curse. You gotta alter the battery box to keep the battery in place. In my case, I used pieces of styrofoam to pack around the battery. Not perfect but good enough.
The POS battery post is still subject to accidental grounding if you're sloppy when removing the battery strap & lid...... just don't be sloppy & you'll be ok.
When I bought a replacement for an 8-year-old Harley battery for my '82 this spring, my local battery store recommended a maintenance free Motocross Platinum YTX20-BS. It's about 1/2 inch thinner than the stock battery, but it came with special instructions for installing on a Harley, and a pair of hard rubber spacers to stick to the inside wall of the battery box so the battery fits tight.
And it came with a nifty plastic cover to put over the termnals to keep 'em from getting shorted when removing or installing the chrome cover and strap. Seems to be working fine so far.
