Hey guys i have a 1971 xlh 900 with the single cable throttle aka deadmans throttle. Is there anyway to make this a spring back hand grip. thought of the idea of installing a spring to pull it back but doesn't seam to have anyway to do it. up for any suggestions in a panic situation it is not fun. thanks guys

Not really.
If your 1971 has the original carb on it then it is going to be a Tillotson.
What that means is the throttle cable pushes out from the twist grip when you open the throttle.
As opposed to a Bendix carb where the cable pulls toward the twist grip when you open the throttle.

In either case (Bendix or Tillotson) these carbs are both butterfly types and use a stiff wire to open and close the throttle.

Inside the handlebar a 1/4 inch diameter pin rides in a slot and all this does not lend itself to returning to close when you release the twist grip, even if you attach a strong spring.

Now there is one way to have the close feature you ask about and that is to replace the existing throttle set up with a conventional barrel twist grip.
You will also have to replace the stiff wire with a flexible braided cable.
This set up is the same as you will find on most other motorcycles.

I am currently doing just the opposite of what you want to do.
I love the hands free throttle and I also have a 1971 XLCH.
I am installing a Mikuni on it and currently I almost have it finished.
This will use an enclosed handlebar braided cable and the throttle will stay on even when I take my hand off the bars. I like that.

Here is a link for some videos I made if you want to take a look.
You will see a lot of Mikuni stuff and some Bendix too.
Might give you some ideas..........

I also have the deadman's throttle. I wouldn't change it at all. Great for long cruzin.
you will get used to it...then you will start enjoying it.
You just have to keep in mind that most of the cars around you have 4 wheel disk brakes now....leave some space when you ride.

Default throttle 1971 XLH

thanks guys yea some getting used to that throttle like the idea of staying in place when cruising but still think safer with spring back throttle will give it a chance. also ride a FXST so going from one to the other is a challenge

It also helps to keep the undesireables from wanting to ride your bike. Just rattle off the list of quirks and they won't bother. The sticky throttle and shifting on the 'wrong side' gets them every time.

It is nice on long rides. I don't even notice it anymore.
