Default 1975 Ironhead

Just bought a 1975 Ironhead, already have a few questions... It looks as if my bike does not have points ignition, I am unsure of when they switched to electric ignition, I thought it was later than '75.

Picture of what should be points ign:

As well, the gauge faces are all fogged over and I can not see through them, anyone know how/if I can take them apart? I would rather not screw them up...

The gauge faces can only be removed by very carefully cutting them off. You can buy a kit with new faces that you then glue on. J&P Cycles and others have the kits.

Many guys have had excellent results refinishing the gauge faces. This is preferable. I do not know the techniques so you will have to research or wait for someone who knows to reply here. I think some have used mothers aluminum polish or similar. Some auto supply shops like Canadian Tire have kits.

That ignition module is an aftermarket electronic ignition. Are there any engravings/embossings/marks/whatever that might ID the manufacturer?

I was hoping I wouldn't have to do something like that... I may have to try and buff them out first and see if it is just the outside that is fogged up. Working in the automotive industry I have heard of a headlamp product that is "supposed" to get the fogged up plastic headlamp back to being clear. Can't say I have seen stunning results...

As far as the ignition module, I just popped the "points" cover open and took a peak inside...here it is for your viewing pleasure:

In case the first bit is hard to read the numbers are: 32598-78 with 36 8 below it. Did '78 XLH's have electric ign?

As well, this "dent" in the frame is normal? I am thinking it is for the throttle cable to pass by the frame from under the tank?

P.S. Thanks for all your help so far Mick! Much appreciated!

Anyone able to give a guy a hint as to how to pop the starter out? Took the bolt for the band in front of the rear cyl. rear pushrod, and the bolt on the primary case, tried to shimmy it out and it just does not want to budge.

Just used the Mothers headlight restore on wife's jeep and have to say I was impressed, might try it and see if it works for you on gauges.

What year bike? A pic of the starter area would help.

There are two long bolts from the outer end right thru the starter body into the case.
