Default jet size

Hi everyone! What I've got is a 1983 Sporty, factory ironhead, factory everything except pipes...the pipes are just wide open drag pipes. I'm not sure what jet is in the carb(didn't write it down), but do i need a bigger one than factory, or smaller? It runs like a cat shot in the ***, but if I can get it better, why not? Thanks!

If the engine runs as strong as you indicate, then I would not change the main jet. On newer bikes that use a computer to tie the ignition, fuel metering etc alltogether, then it would be an issue.
Ironheads were made to run with drag pipes. These pipes give the engine the correct back pressure to produce their top performance. The only thing that will mess up a set of drag pipes is if you cut them off to make shorter pipes. Of perhaps someone has original pipes and just removes the mufflers and runs what is left of the pipes as 'straights.' This is a mistake because the pipes will be less than 40 inches and the performance will fall off drastically due to the lack of proper back pressure.
You are good with what you have. Forget the jet change.......pg

Thanks alot PG, I wasn't aware that that was how the ironheads were designed. Like I said, it really runs great, so I'm going to listen to you and leave it alone. maybe after I get it cleaned up and shining, I'll put another pic of it up. Thanks!

Yeah, 40 inch drag pipes are perfect for an ironhead. Different story with the new equipment. Computers rule that stuff.
Dealers around here (Texas) will not work on any Harley older that 1985. I don't think the youngsters they have working in the back know anything about the old iron. Anyway, for whatever reason they will not work on them.
So, if you ride an ironhead you will have two choices: Take it to an independent shop or become a wrench yourself. I chose a long, long time ago to do my own wrenching. I do the wrench work on my Dyna as well. Screw those dealers. I look at them the same way I view the IRS........pg
