I am not new to wrenches, but I am fairly new to Ironheads. I received my 78 XLH after it had not been running for 30 years. When I first went over it I checked the valves and points, only one valve (rear exhaust) needed adjustment and the points were spot on as well.
2000 miles later a similar situation, this time only the front exhaust valve needed adjustment (was too tight) and the points were exactly the same. Is this common, or am I really blind to something?
I think that if the carb is properly set up, ignition timing correct, no intake/exhaust leaks, etc [all the basics set up well] that the pushrods will tend to stay in adjustment.
What i do is a compression test from time to time, because it is quicker and easier than a pushrod adjustment check. When my p-rods are good the compression is 150 both front and rear on mine. If compression is off then i check p-rod adjustment. Last time one cylinder was at 145, and one p-rod on that cylinder was tight.
The manual calls for p-rod check every 2000 miles.
my push rods get checked once a season, in the spring before the first ride, i do between 4000 and 6000 miles a year this year will be higher, be healthier this summer been able to ride alot more, still wont have to touch till winter, i have had my heads done with new seats and valves about 3 years ago, valves get tight when the valve beats itself into the seat , as mick said just give it a once over and ride!
