Default line up rear wheel

I took my rear wheel off to do some maintenance on my 1983 Sportster. What is the best way to reinstall the rear wheel and make sure it is lined up correctly? My maintenance manual talks about how to line it up with the front wheel, but I'm more concerned thatthe chain is traveling smoothly, and if the wheel isn't lined up correctly, wouldn't the chain run rough? Thanks for any help.

Just follow the instruction given in your manual. Set the forks dead ahead. Use a sraight edge to position against the larger tire (which is going to be the rear) and adjust the wheel right or left as needed to position the straight edge parallel with the front tire. This alligns your wheels.
Now sight down the top of the chain. It should be running straight. There are only two reasons why the chain is mis-alligned:
1) The wheels are not parallel
2) The rear wheel is offset because a different spacer has been inserted on the rear axle. (not likely to have happened)................pg

I just take a tape measure and measure from the swingarm pivot bolt to the axle on each side, and adjust until they're equal (and the chain's the correct tightness, of course). I then sight down the chain to make sure it appears to be running straight on the sprockets.
