Default 1981 cases

Hello I have a set of 81 cases i am trying to put together. The bike is a bare bones chopper not a stock bike. I am looking for info on what components from a 1980 motor that will swap over to the 81 cases. I know the starter changed and i wont be able to use the starter from the 80. I am also Trying to find out if the cams, crank assy, and the lifters off of the 80 will work in the new 81 cases. I need a cam cover for an 81 case. I would like to find part numbers for the items i need. Where can i find these magic books with all the parts interchange info and part numbers in them? Thanks

eBay has two manuals for sale bid on them cause your going to need that info, I have one but won't part with it as I still have my 81 shovel. If you need help with something just pm me and I'll have a look in mine maybe that will help you out.

You need both of these books ...
99451-85A Factory Parts Catalog
99484-85 Factory Service Manual

They are your two most important shop tools. They are widely available. You can order them thru a local indie motorcycle shop or HD dealer; or put the part numbers into the eBay and Google searches.

IronMick, I highly agree when you say "They are your two most important shop tools". I did a search like you suggested and came up with a sunnymeadcycles website that sure seems like a bargain. Have you heard of them or have any qualms about getting a parts catalog and/or service manual on a CD? For my '77 they list both for 16.99 + S&H which sure beats what I'm seeing on the 'Bay. Hell, they'll give you everything HD they have for 39.99 +. Looking forward to your reply as I'm just about ready to start my own thread and dig into my rolling basket case and (like a lot of Ironhead owners) on a shoestring budget.

AFAIK any site selling CD copies of HD manuals is violating copyright rules so the manuals are illegal. If anyone knows differently please let us know.
