Default Starter question

Being that starters don't have any part numbers on them, how do you determine what year and model the starter will fit? I talked to the owner of our local HD shop, and he said you have to know what you're looking for. This guy (Jimmy the Jew from Detroit HD) was a total azzhole about it.
I don't know starters, and I'm not a Harley mechanic, so that's why I went to the so called professionals. There are quite a few sellers out there that only want to make a buck, and will tell you it will fit your bike or tell you anything to make a sale. I will be contacting the HD reps and see if they can shed any light on the subject. I was wondering if anyone knew of a website that offered any help. Thanks.

Just have the dealer get the part number for you from the parts catalogue for your year and model. There is also a chrome one listed in the p&a catalogue. All harley parts have part numbers right down to washers that only costs fifty cents.

Default RE: Starter question

There are no numbers whatsoever on any starters. That's the problem I'm having. I have a parts catalog, but ubless the seller knows what year the starter is off of, it's a crap shoot when buying a used one or a take off one. I have sent questions to ebay sellers asking for a part number, and they all come back telling me there was no number on the starter. I thought ALL parts had part numbers stamped in them, but I'm finding out I'm wrong.
