At times i have a small pop or explosion when i go to give it gas ,that is waiting for a red lite at the signals.I have a 1975 sportster with a mikini carb,it has been doing this for a while, just a small pop when i give it gas to go. Any ideas? Timing advanced ,retarded ?
Thanks.
Ok Thanks guys,i will check this tomorrow night. There is a y there that attaches to both cylinders then to the carb,i have all ways had a hard time to attach this piece good ,it all ways keeps moving ,you need 3 hands.i think there are 2 o rings there and i used gasket paper to go around, then the steel clamps.Any segustions?
use a majic marker when taking it off - like a timing mark - after you attach the manifold to the stay ( the upright between the center case bolt and the bottom bolt on the manifold ) if it was in the right place you want to put it back in the same spot - than >
once its set in place with the O rings on the Y and use electrical tape to keep it in place - rap the tape around and over the top of the rubber o rings ( twice around ) than put the clamps on and leave the tape in place -- johnjzjz
Is it a Mikuni VM38-9? What air cleaner are you using? What adapter between the manifold and carb? Pics of the setup would help.
It is very important to have a support bracket - usually running from the back of the air cleaner to a lifter block bolt.
A good way to check for intake leaks is, with the engine at idle, to aim a propane [from a not-lit propane torch] at the connections between the cylinder heads and the manifold, the manifold and the carb, and the carb and the air cleaner. Any change in the RPM [usually drops] indivates a leak.
Yes i am running a VM 38 carb.I am supporting it with aircraft safty wire. Where would you put the support braket?Using a round K&M filter,a lot llighter then the big oval harley one.
Thanks for all your info.

Skip the propane torch and use a can of Brake Clean with the little tube , never did understand why some people wanted to spray a combustible fuel air mixture around a running engine with a gas tank above it and yes I've seen it go bad before .
Part number 29207-87T is a HD part made for IronHeads [despite the -87 on the part number]. It will work for many A/Cs, usually requires a little bending. Most guys make their own from a piece of 1/8" flat steel stock ...
