I took my 83 xlh out today and at idle it's fine but under load it cuts out twist throttle and it clears up bike has sat all winter could it be bad gas or need tune up the bike was just completely rebuilt before I got it plus it has brand new s&s carb any suggestions thanks
I'm not saying this is your problem, but I had similar symptoms with my '82. After sitting all winter one year, the first time I got it out, it would start and idle fine. But when running down the road at a steady speed it would stumble and I'd gradually slow down. A good twist of the throttle would speed me back up again.
I found I had small chunks of yellowish grit in the float bowl of the carb. Once I cleaned them out, the problem disappeared. I was told that the pieces of grit could have been residue left behind from gas evaporating out of the float bowl over the winter.
I'm not familiar with S&S carbs, but it sounds like a fuel passage may be blocked or partially blocked?
