You could ask the same question -- if Harley uses an old air-cooled engine in the Sportster, how can they charge $13,000 for it when you can buy a Chinese air-cooled Sportster lookalike for $1000?
The truth is, they don't have to justify anything to anyone. The price is what it is, and either people will buy it or they won't. It doesn't matter how much it costs them to build it, it only matters whether end customers will buy enough of them to have made it worthwhile.
That's the great thing about the Lightning -- if you want it, and can afford it, then -- go buy it. Nothing's stopping you.

I dont care what it costs the MoCo to build ****, But if I see anything im intersteded in and its value for money Ill buy it.
As for the live wire, The price of parts break down frame, wheels, tires, electric motor, and batteries vs what ya get for ya 30K Is laughable,
As others have said the price just aint worth it.
Yeah Ill buy a lightning if its worth it as its a hell of a lot better in value than what HDs putting out there and it goes to market in a coupe months.
But ya know if you like Harleys E Bike so much and your so defending of the brand, order one and post the sales receipt here, Ill have a lot more respect for ya then.

A Big song and dance about a new V Rod model , HD even did a big documentary on TV with Williy G and the design team that built it, And how long did it last 3 years ?.
This is Harleys problem,Theyve lost touch with its loyal customer base, People want a Harley that looks, sounds and rides like one AT a reasonable price.
I understand why they did it to show off what their capable of moving forward but an overpriced electric Harley ? One on 🤣

Just dont see how the Livewire ends well for the MoCo. Just the most basic internet search is going to put the LW in a bad place vs Zero or Lightning. $30k for the LW with a 70 mile highway range, 50 min recharge on a FAST charger, 92 mph top speed vs Lighting at $13k, 150mile range, 30 min recharge and a 150mph top speed?? Its a no brainer. And the likelihood is that HD will be facing a much larger player once Lightning or Zero gets acquired by a larger motorcycle maker.
If the LW was $20k it would stand a chance because of the dealer network. But at $30k I dont see how it makes it past the first couple of years. And HD isnt known for lowering their prices so the LW will only go higher from $30k. IMO the LW will be pulled from the market faster than Buell.

Well the reason I got the sporty in the first place is because it HAS an air cooled motor, pushrods, old reliable tech and a build quality 😬 worth 13 K ( or so I thought ) and its affordable. The engine design and model has been round since the 50s, So the bugs should have been worked out ( Unlike the poor stage 4 souls on their M8s.
