Default M8 Testing

Anyone know how many hours of testing HD put on this engine before it came into their pipeline? I read that Ford ran the EcoBoost engine for 1 million miles (lab test) as part of their testing process.

Just wondering, for there has been much discussion on engine oil temps with this engine here. If there is in fact temp concerns would not the lab testing had discovered it?

They started in 05 and had 1.5 million miles on the test mules. One with over 300K on it.

The first ones didn't last too long.

I have read those comments you speak of. To put it mildly, I have more faith in the Motor Company than the Internet Engineers.

HD had prototypes of the M8 in 2005? It's been under development for 11 years?

I agree.

I call bullsh*t. Show me evidence that Harley has had and has been testing the M8 since 2005.

Just because they started 10 years ago doesnt mean they had the engine built and running. Im sure they had many iterations and when they finally came with the final product they started logging miles. But yet they still have issues along the way after it came out.

1 million miles could mean it was ran on a dyno for x amount of hours. That doesnt relate to real world riding. Thus having 1 year problems.

My 'guess' is that HD started serious design when the EURO emission standards for motorcycles were developed in the mid-2000's: http://transportpolicy.net/index.php...les:_Emissions

From this CARB site: https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/motcyc...ech-review.pdf May be outdated.

"Harley Davidson certified 8 engine families, with emissions ranging from 0.751 to 1.711 g/km HC+NOx. Harley Davidson appears to be having more difficulty in progressing with emission reductions, which may be attributed to their 45o V-twin engine. Only one engine family has emissions less than the Tier II standard. Minimal emission control technology is in place, other than oxidation catalysts, which are on half their engine families. Three engine families are still carbureted, including their lowest emitter. Harley Davidson’s corporate fleet average is 1.07g/km HC+NOx."

As I recall the pressers prior to release of the M8 were noting the need to meet current and expected standards. Not sure about noise issues.
