no it does it no matter the gear. Road it to work this morning. Have to push it above 3k for it to do it but it doesnt matter what gear.
I test rode a 17 RGU and it had a very light ping in 5th,50-60 MPH, my first thought was it was something else, maybe not. If it was my ride it would not concern me, you want your timing just at edge, I don't know what brand of fuel the dealer uses either.
yea well my 103 dont have that and it dont "ping" like my m8. I put a little octane booster in during my lunch break and if it helped it was very little. What puzzels me is why i can only really hear it on my left side (clutch side) almost sounds like a old sporster i had the clutch handle would rattle. An if your setting up right with head in the wind its even harder to hear. Taking it for service in the morning. My ocd is gonna be the death of me. Once i hear something in a motor or around it it drives me freakin nuts untill i fix it.
Wondering if it is even possible that maybe the fuel pump is making the noise? Also think im gonna have plugs checked and may have them replaced. I did baby the crap out of it when breaking in. Next one if i ever get another one im gonna ride the **** out of it that way if it delelopes a issue atleast i can say its my fault. Ha
Holland, when you get this sorted out, and I know you will, please keep us updated.
Hey guys, just got to read this thread. Let me offer my $.02 as a tuner and see if it will help.
The engine management system detects detonation then, in about .5-1 second, starts pulling timing out. The amount and aggression is determined by the ECM, up to a possible 12 deg retard.
The system also will remember the retard at least until you stop for gas and shut it off then start it back up. The system assumes you got better quality fuel than what caused the retard so it resets the ignition map. Then it will relearn the retard to quell detonation/ping if necessary.
Also the ignition retard is adjustable/tunable based on cyl head or engine temperature so the retard only occurs when necessary (high load/hot).
I believe soon there will be some adjustability/tuning ability for the new knock sensor sensitivity so false knock can be minimized or eliminated.
IME two things that can cause detonation/ping with an otherwise properly tuned bike..1) High combustion temps as in hot weather and 2) High engine loading. A typical example: 6th gear roll on from 60-65 mph.
So? What does all this crap mean? Just ride the bike and let the system take care of the timing adjustments.
Or
Get it tuned by someone with a good reputation and your ride back will be better than you ever knew it could be.. And with documentation to assure you your investment is running at its best.

Thanks Bob for taking the time to make light of the situation. What you posted makes since. Even to a dummy like me. I do hvac for a living wish i knew more about our bikes. This will allow me to sleep a little better tonight. Taking a trip to the smokeys in a 2 wks with my wife for the first time since we started having children 8 yrs ago. When we get back i will try to find a good tuner nearby. Im about a hr away from nashville if you or anyone knows someone in that area that is good please let me know. I am going to need a tune anyway when i install exhaust and intake. Again thank you for posting.
Yea i had my 1k service done today and got to set down and talk with the service manager for a while about this issue. An He admitted right off that unforunatly most of the new bikes with the m8s stock do ping if you twist there ear a little. An he also said that he is yet to see or ride a bike with a stage 1 that still done it. I have family that works there and dont think i would be lied to. But who knows right. He said his even did it when it was stock and for me to ride it untill i was rdy to go to stage 1 then i wouldnt have to worry about it anymore. We agreed that alot of people prolly never notice it. Because first of all you have to really twist the throttle in the right moment just to get it to ping. Not to mention wind noise and or a radio make it really hard to hear even if you have good hearing but non the less its there.
Also something i found pretty cool is my dealership loves powervision. An there tuner that has been with harley 20 plus years and been tuning bikes since the beginning likes the powervision too. They actually all recommend it over the SE tuner. There is powervision posters and flags hanging all over there shop. Ha. Which works great for me because i like the powervision myself. So guess its time to get in touch with fuel moto and get a few goodies ordered.
My slip-ons only stock '17 CVO bike pinged like a mother when I went to CO last month. I tried octane boost which made it worse. 91 is the highest CO has. I had to keep the rpms up way high, stay 1-2 gears lower, to keep the ping to a min. It still did it full time, take off to highway. Feathering the throttle very gently helped. Just taking off from a stoplight under regular riding conditions caused it to ping. My best result was running 87. Keep in mind I was running in the Rockies and the 8000' and up elevation was my poison. Back home at 1000', bike ran great again. I'm going to have dealer check it out cause to me it didn't self adj to the alt change in the slightest. I have no plans to modify bike any more than my slip-ons, so a tuner seems unneeded. But I'm not against using one if needed. Just trying to decide which would be best if/when the time comes to jump in
Got a 2017 RK with 3500 miles on it. I've heard a very slight flutter/ping when I twist on it hard, can't make out if it's pinging or the MAF making a flutter sound or what. Went for a ride this evening with my wife 2 up and noticed that with the additional load no flutter/ping sound at all. I even tried going up a hill that I can normally get it to make the sound but this evening just potato/potato.
