Header Pipe ?
Looking to replace the header pipes on my FLHRXS this spring. My question, does it make a difference on which pipe crosses over? Are there any performance gains either way?
The crossover pipe on the stock bike is bad. So if your going to upgrade to a new header pipe you will have to see what is used, as they may well not all use the stock one. If your looking for one that fits with the stock heatshields I would recommend the one from Fullsac.
If your going to change the header pipe you should change the crossover away from the stock one. The stock pipe has a "T" joint where the cross over connects and a "T" joint does not flow well. Look inside of the stock pipe and you can see how poorly they are made. Great for production cost reduction, not great for performance. Same goes for the crossover pipe. If your changing, just to change and not looking at performance then it doesn't much matter.
If you have done that take a look in the pipe and look at where the cross over sticks in. Some stick into the pipe 1/2 or more while others are less. Take a long grinding bit and trip it off flush with the ID of the pipe is about the best you can do with it.

I am replacing the entire exhaust. I have seen pipes that cross over(guess it would really be under) from the front cylinder and also from the rear cylinder. Which is better, or doesn't make a difference?
The pipe orientation and overall design very much makes a difference, this varies greatly based on the engine configuration and power level. Tell us a bit about your bike and combination and we will be able to offer the best advice and info.
