Default Interesting statement from Service Associate.

So, had my bike picked up for my 10k service this morning. I called the Service department to make mention of something I noticed last week. There was, what looks like to me, caked up oil and or road grime underneath the bike up front right under the oil filter.

My first though was oh crap I've got a leak. I checked my oil a day or so later, cold....and it was right in the middle, which by the owner's manual is correct for a cold check on the stand.

Anyway, I wanted to bring this to their attention and have them make sure everything was good. I also mentioned the oil line clamp recall from late 2016 early 2017. I bought mine in June last year, so I guess I assumed my clamps had been replaced before purchase...and that I've never noticed oil on my concrete. The service guy said he looked at my warranty?? and said my bike didn't fall into the recall parameters.

Anyway, thought that was an interesting statement. I thought all oil cooled bikes would use the same clamps and fall under the recall notice.

Early adopter, mine was repaired 9/16...IIRC the recall was to inspect for improperly installed clamps...many reported being in and out in minutes upon passing the visual inspection. I think the affected ones had the pinch clamp located on the raised portion of the flange intead of past it like it should have been

Oh I will def do that when I pick it up. Main reason for posting is I guess I assumed ALL oil cooled engines were affected by this recall/bad clamps issue.

For sure man. Tell them to check it anyway, even if it’s out of his parameters

You could always just get a flashlight, and check it yourself. Check that the clamps are installed properly, and the hosecis not Leaking. clean off the gunk, and see if it comes back.

Since you've never seen any oil actually leaking, maybe it's just the dirty oil that almost always escapes and spills in that area when changing out the oil filter during maintenance...

Only early-build '17 bikes were affected, and only a percentage of those actually had the recall. The 'bad' ones had clamps that were simply not crimped. Mine had the recall and they were fine. They only replace them if they're not crimped. Easy to see with a 1-minute visual inspection.

Almost for sure, the oil accumulation you are seeing under the filter is because the kid who changes your oil at the dealer shop doesn't make the slightest effort to prevent the spillage. When I change my oil at home I go to great effort to prevent any spillage, and it is actually difficult to get the job done without at least a little dribble. But, most of the spillage can be gathered, rather than allowed to just run down the frame. If you had an actual leak there, you'd almost surely have some oil dripping onto the floor overnight.

Thanks all. Yeah this was my second though when I didnt really see any oil loss indications.

So me mentioning it to the service guy will hopefully remedy this. We'll see...
