mine is pretty ticky thats for sure, i wear ear buds most of the time so it dulls it, got a bit worse after the stage 2 cam install but they said "thats the noise of the cam"! LOL what else would they say. Did seem to quite down a bit when i added octane boost to already 91 fuel so would have been about 93 or so. Who knows!
are the wet heads noisier than the oil cooled? some buds I ride with that have Rushmore 103 wet heads sound horrible when I pull next to them at stops...every time I think they sound like they're on the verge of grenading

My 15 stock wethead was fairly noisy running HD synthetic, so went to HD conventional dino oil which seemed to quiet it down some...then on my last service done by my Indy, I mentioned the noisiness and he recommended Amsoil 20-50 synthetic...
This stuff is the "***** of oil"...with no clacking, no ticking, no nothing, just a smooth running motor...still amazed sitting idling at lights!
Mine was clacky under a load and it appears it was detonation. I use super unleaded but adding a bit of octane booster completely eliminated it. May not be the same issue but sounds similar.
Mine pings under load and throttle. But nothing the mc will do about it. Warrenty is bout up. I will either buy a extended or put a tuner on it. Got little less then 2 months to decide. Sucks but thats part of it i guess. If you where a helment you cant hear it. If you got loud pipes you prolly couldnt here it but its there. Been fighting it for almost 2 years now.
Well to be honest, I thought my engine completely stock was a bit noisy too. However, after my cam install with S&S parts all around, it's a lot quieter, it really is.
I suspect that it's the cheap azz lifters that HD continues to use imo.
I don't think the M8 is any more noisy than the TC. The noises it makes are different than the TC and that takes some getting used too. I don't bother listening any more as I have learned what is normal with the engine.
I test rode a 107 about a year ago. A noisy top end wasn't something that I recall from that experience. Then again it was on a Heritage with the windshield on. I was wearing my FF helmet and didn't bother to put my ear plugs in for the short ride. Most of what I remember was the terrible buffeting and wind noise. So, if the 107 was noisy, I would have probably missed it.
I don't know... But I suspect potential buyers coming from other brands, that are not steeped in all things HD (the brand, history, etc.), might be put off by the noisiness that I notice on the 114.
