On new tires for an 18 flhxs
The only 3 I’m considering are the Dunlop AE’s
metzeler 880’s or the commander 3’s, most curious about the commanders since there’s not much out on them on the forum.
Metzlers are a high mileage harder rubber tire in my opinion, careful in rain or cool conditions for me. Dunlop's for me are a good balance of high mileage and softer better grip in rain. Never tried the commanders. Will likely stick with Dunlop's for my riding.
I went with the Dunlop AEs when they first came out and have put them on ever since. Initial impression was they felt great but that's mainly because I replaced old worn tires with new tires. But they've never given me reason to not like them throughout their lifespan. They also have 1/32nd more tread depth than the OEM Dunlops and I have always added Tire & Wheel coverage to ESPs, so I know in my travels there will often be a Harley dealership within striking distance that will have the replacements I need whether they meet the warranty replacement requirements or not.

After the stock tires wore out I replaced them with American Elites. I feel like they wear a little slower than the stock tires, with the same level of grip in all conditions. I will replace my tires with the Commander 3. Just because.
Dont listen to MJ... He doesn’t keep a bike long enough to replace the tires! (sarcasm)
Now that I say that, since I changed tires I’ve had to have them replaced via ESP for having nails in them. I can’t really comment on the mileage condition of the AEs.
I had Metzler ME880 as OEM on a Triumph I own. It needed tires, and the quickest set I could get was the ME888. I didn’t like the 880s, and was very hesitant to jump back on the Metzler train. Parts guy praised the 888, said lots of customers liked them. I bought them and they are a huge improvement over the 880 in terms of handling. Much quicker tip in, holds a line very well, no where near as vague and heavy feeling as the 880. I haven’t been in the rain with them yet, but the 880s were fair in the rain, so I hope the 888s are at least as good.

i don’t keep long enough either, It’s my first tire change in 12-15 years... usually trade every year or two.

hey, I resemble that remark..actually had 60,000 miles on my last two bikes, both Road Kings and went thru 5 sets of AEs, mainly because I had nails 3 times! but, I always replace at 2/3 nds just because I like having newer rubber to keep performance near its best and don't consider spending money on tires at all a waste, which is usually around 13 / 14 K on rears and 15 /16 K on fronts
