I agree, Harley customer care was willing to listen to me but they were not willing to reconsider their decision. I remained professional throughout the conversation. The best line from the customer care person was: "Not to be blunt sir, but you have to accept that the highly trained Harley Technician knows what is needed for your motorcycle." I wonder if 45 to 60 years of age is still their target demographic.

Their target demographic appears to be 60 and older, unfortunately that age group is shrinking rapidly. As Ford used to say "Quality is job one".

For those of us who are still experiencing problems getting our bikes fixed, and dealing with miserable support from Harley Customer Service, this venue provides a valuable resource to share our experiences with getting the bikes back in service.
I understand the issues that are out there..just disagreed with this statement of yours is all........."I see guys saying "no problem here", but you can bet that they are driving around like "little old ladies", never going above 3500 rpm and rarely above 65 mph."

I know my front head gasket failed, but I may also have experienced sumping for the first time in my stage 1 107. I personally feel the front gasket failed as a byproduct of sumping. I've kept up with these sumping threads since I joined three years ago, and it sounds like sumping to me, especially reading the TSB (LINK).

Ambient Temp: 55*F
Sustained high RPM on the interstate for hours
Noticed reduced power, lack of "oomph" going up inclines
Noticed excessive heat on mostly the right leg while on the interstate (similar to the heat I feel on 110*F days sitting in traffic)
Parked the bike and could feel extreme heat, was listening to the engine and it sounded more "grindy" - this is also when I noticed the front head gasket leak.
Shut off the bike and the engine made a click-clack, clunky sort of sound (definitely not normal).
I popped my heavy breather filter off because I was going to oil it I could not touch it with my bare hands it was so hot - the intake tube was hotter, and it had a lot of engine oil in there.

Brandon, Usually it is the rear head gasket right near the exhaust port that starts to leak. Thinking back, I now remember that I too was experiencing an abnormal amount of heat coming off the right side of the engine while at sustained freeway cruising speeds. I have the street cannon mufflers, so the cat converter has been moved aft away from that side. I have also experienced poor gas mileage as compared to my riding buddies. My bike has shown these symptoms almost from the day I bought it, but being that it was new to me, I had my suspicions but it took a while to sort it out. Originally I thought the bike might be running too lean. I had the Harley techs check the tune on the ECM and then later added the Harley Smart Tune Pro in the hopes that this would cure the problem. Eventually it was determined that sumping was causing the issue.

New people turn 60 every day. With longer lifespans and healthier older age due to medical advancements, I would say this demographic is growing, not shrinking...

In my case, the Harley Tech acknowledged the damage to my Pistons and Cylinders. He said it was within Harley service limits. I just have to decide if it's within my service limits. If it is, I will ride it, if it is not I will replace the Pistons and Cylinders.

Mchad, Maybe, even though the numbers in this age bracket are increasing, the old school Harley guys are fading away. Harley really has to up their game if they want to win over a new demographic. These teething problems on the M-8 are not going to help. Harley has been pretty tough on warranty claims as far back as the early 90's when I first started riding them. At that time they had a series of defective ignition locks which would cause the electrical system to cut out without warning. Harley initially refused to repair the locks under warranty, however, a group of online forum participants successfully petitioned the NHTSA and the locks were recalled. In my case I had replaced 2 prior locking mechanisms, and I was eventually (reluctantly) repaid for both of them. Harley has had various issues over the years, but they were essentially the only game in town if you wanted a big twin with style and machismo. I have continued to ride them, hoping with each new model that this will be the bike that does not disappoint.
